Building Confidence Through Inclusive Play
At Disability 4 Sport, we believe sport should be inclusive, empowering, and above all fun. This case study follows the journey of one of our regular participants, a young person whose enthusiasm and honesty shine as bright as their energy in our sessions. Their story captures what Disability 4 Sport is all about: building confidence, forming friendships, and making sport accessible for everyone.
Getting ready: The anticipation
For this participant, the excitement starts before they even arrive: “Kind of great, because I am always ready for sports day.” This shows us how important routine and joyful anticipation are for our athletes. Knowing that a safe, exciting space awaits them twice a week builds not only engagement, but emotional resilience and self-motivation.
Favourite activities
The participant is especially passionate about dynamic, interactive games: “I like playing the game with the rocket and pinball, and I am allowed to hit it very high and try to catch it. Also tag.”
This highlights the importance of imaginative, playful equipment and inclusive rules that empower children to express themselves physically and creatively. These games aren’t just fun, they build motor skills, coordination, and confidence.
Facing challenges, with support
While most moments are joyful, not every activity comes easily. For this participant, hockey presents a bit more of a challenge: “Hockey is kind of tricky for me.”
But that’s where the power of our team steps in. The participant never faces challenges alone: “Josh, Monica and the other grown up friends” “Then Josh and Lois help me.”
Our trained, compassionate staff and volunteers are central to every success story. They don’t just lead sessions, they build trust, create adaptations, and support emotional growth.
Emotional impact: Loving the activity (Even When It’s Tough)
When asked how they feel during the session: “I love it. Also I get upset when I can’t do it.”
This honest expression reveals how invested our participants are in their success, a powerful indicator of personal growth. Setbacks are part of learning, and the support they receive ensures each challenge becomes an opportunity for encouragement, not defeat.
The Magic Wand Moment: Dreams of Community
We asked: If you had a magic wand, what would you change or add? “I would build a base to do our own sports with my bestest friends like Emily, Josh, Monica etc.”
This dream perfectly mirrors our mission: a safe base for community, friendship, and belonging. Their vision aligns with our long-term goal, to build not just activities, but sustainable communities through inclusive sport.
New friendships and new skills
In their time with us, this participant has made several friends: “Yes, Emily, Fin… I don’t remember more names, but also grown-up friends.” They also loved the summer club: “Building dens and water fights.”
This speaks to the power of unstructured play and creative exploration in developing friendships, teamwork, and social confidence, especially in inclusive environments.
More than a game
This case study isn’t just about sports. It’s about inclusion, support, and the joy of being part of a team that sees your strengths, supports your challenges, and celebrates your wins, big and small.
