About Mistley Kids Club
Mistley Kids Club offers after-school and holiday programmes for children ages 4 -16 (up to 19 if they have additional needs). We’re Ofsted regulated, and all staff are DBS checked.
We are a non-profit, fully inclusive club welcoming children of any ability from both mainstream and SEND schools. Children interact, play together, and build friendships regardless of communication methods or any additional needs. Our Mainstream children love to support those with additional needs, fostering a caring and accepting environment. We value every child and create a close-knit community at Mistley Kids Club.
K’s story
At Mistley we pride ourselves on being fully inclusive, trying to provide care to any child that comes through our door.
About 10 years ago a young boy, who we will call K, struggled greatly with his behaviour due to his high needs. K needed somewhere fto go during the school holidays to provide a break for his mum. Every respite she tried turned her down and due to concerns for her son, trusting a provider was very difficult. Having staff who worked at the special school he attended and getting to know the child very well, his mum when offered support for him to come to us took the offer up. This was a massive step for her to trust a provider to care for her son.
Over the years we built a great relationship with the family gaining that trust and providing the best possible care for her son. We were able to find PA’s to help provide additional support too. As the years went on the support needed grew to needing support with school meetings.
We were able to go with mum and dad to meetings to support them on how their child, K, was doing at school. Unfortunately, the need for support was due to the child’s behaviour unfortunately declining and staff at the school struggling. Due to our experience working with this child, we were able to provide much information to the school on strategies to support the child. The school did however choose to not follow our ideas and suggestions on how to support the child which did lead to further decline in the child’s experiences at school. We continued to support the family through this difficult time by checking in regularly and continuing to try offer support to the school.
Over time the school did eventually reach out for us to support in a small way, but we were able to pass on information to the new school the child would be attending. The support will continue until the new school is comfortable and no longer needs our support. The mum often tells us how grateful she is for everything we have done for her. This is amazing for us to hear that our help is appreciated. We look forward to another 2/3 years of supporting the family until it’s time for K to move onto adult services where we will support with his transition.
